Description

Description

ConvertKit is delightful email marketing software built for creators. We help creators own their audience and turn fans into customers. For makers, authors, chefs, musicians, athletes, and anyone else making a living by creating the culture we all love, there isn’t a better tool for reaching inboxes. More importantly, there isn’t a team more committed to helping creators earn a living doing work that matters.

We’re on a mission to help creators earn $1 billion using our SaaS email marketing platform. We have always been 100% independent and 100% remote. We are proud to have built a product that our customers love, and we look for people who have enthusiasm and belief in our mission, vision, and values (https://convertkit.com/mission) to join our team.

ConvertKit is hiring a VP of Engineering who will be a strong leader for the company, a terrific collaborator for Product, and an excellent people manager who can guide the team to ship high-quality, reliable and scalable code quickly.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Engineering team of three engineering managers and 20 engineers, including two infrastructure engineers, to build an effortless product used by millions of creators. We are inspired by the Shape Up method (https://basecamp.com/shapeup/webbook) for product development and the Spotify model for squad organization.
  • As part of the executive team, provide insight and strategic thinking to help ConvertKit grow as a business while maintaining our strong people-centric internal culture; help set overall strategy, tactical plans, and measurement; and ensure clear communication flows through the entire org.
  • Collaborate closely with Product to identify opportunities for improvement in our product development processes and velocity. Consistently evaluate and update processes and outcomes to bring the most value to our customers.
  • Work with the engineering managers and tech leads to help the engineering function mature with initiatives like actively useful engineering principles, evolving bug practices, consistency in addressing incidents, and setting engineering-specific metrics.
  • Collaborate with Operations and engineering managers on people-focused processes like interviewing and hiring, and professional development and promotions.
  • Guide and mentor direct reports with clarity and empathy.
  • Deeply understand our customer base to build the best tool to serve creators. Stay up to date on market trends, creator needs and product opportunities.

Requirements

Strong candidates will:

  • Have a deep desire to contribute to and build on our vision of being a small and efficient team, bootstrapped, remote, and always dedicated to the creator community.
  • Have extensive experience leading software teams to quickly ship well-tested features with a consistent cadence, on a stable, scalable and secure infrastructure. Experience at a product-driven SaaS B2C company ideal.
  • Be adept at using business and product metrics to make decisions and drive direction.
  • Enjoy both management and collaboration.
  • Be committed to building a diverse engineering team that serves as a role model for the software industry.
  • Have the ability to foster both high performance and a high degree of psychological safety on the team. This requires strong empathy, communication, and listening skills to understand and advocate for the needs of the team.
  • Be comfortable delivering constructive feedback to drive individual growth and fostering productive conflict to seek out the best and most diverse ideas to reach the best solutions for customers.
  • Be autonomous and self-motivated to work effectively in a 100% remote company.
  • Have a background in developing applications using Ruby on Rails, and experience with other tools in our technology stack: React, MySQL, Elasticsearch, Cassandra. This is not a hands-on coding role, and experience leading software development is more important than programming skill
  • Have enthusiasm for and belief in our mission, vision, and values.
  • Live and work primarily in US time zones.

Success in This Role

Success in this role will be measured by:

  • Creating a world-class culture of inclusivity and belonging -- Qualitatively, we evaluate the happiness of engineers at ConvertKit, the commitment to diversity and inclusion, the psychological safety of the engineering environment, the contribution of engineers to the overall company culture, and our contribution to the wider engineering culture in the industry. Quantitatively, we measure team happiness through our regular engagement survey (leading indicator) and unwanted turnover (lagging indicator).
  • Growth of our customer base -- The engineering team is responsible for scaling our infrastructure and building product to drive total free and paying customers on our platform.
  • Creating and driving our north star metrics -- We regularly evaluate our metrics to understand the value we provide to customers.
  • Customer happiness -- The goal of everything we build is to make our customers happy. Engineers influence customer happiness (leading indicator) and churn (lagging indicator) by actively participating in establishing roadmaps and building high quality products that delight creators.
  • Speed -- Our goal is to build the best creator marketing platform in the world. To do this, we need to constantly focus on increasing product development velocity without sacrificing quality.
  • Keeping our promises -- We set SLAs that correspond to core app accessibility and functionality for our customers. We may not be an enterprise company with contracts dependent on SLAs, but we act like we are.

ConvertKit is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity in all of its forms, and we hire the best person we can for each role, no matter your personal background. Research tells us that applicants who are female or non-binary, as well as applicants who are people of color, are less likely to apply for roles they do not feel 100% qualified for. If you think you meet more than 50% of our requirements but fewer than 100% of them, please apply. We’re imperfect communicators, so think of our job postings as the starting point for discussion rather than proof that you shouldn’t apply.
