Ruby on Rails Application Developer

WestEd Interactive is looking for an experienced Ruby on Rails developer to help design and build a number of interactive web applications for schools, districts, states and the federal government. We work as a close-knit team to quickly build applications that have immediate and significant value to their users and to the larger education community.

The developer will work directly with WestEd Interactive's producers to gain a strong understanding of the problem domain and to iteratively refine the applications as they are built. He or she will work with the entire application stack, from helping to design the database and building sophisticated model classes, to writing templates, to layering on a richer user experience using with the jQuery JavaScript library. While we have designers on staff to do the heavy lifting, a working knowledge of CSS is important.

Comfortable working in UNIX-like environments, particularly Linux and Solaris.

Knowledge of the Ruby language, object-oriented programming.

Significant experience developing and deploying Ruby on Rails applications.

Database design and SQL experience (MySQL directly applicable).

Strong HTML, XHTML, and CSS experience.

Experience working in a team environment; friendly, outgoing manner.

Great communication skills, both verbal and written.

Able to work in our downtown San Francisco office.
