Who We Are

We are the ‘future media’ team embedded within BBC Audio and Music, the people that bring you the BBC’s national speech and music radio stations.

What We Do

We innovate on the web and other platforms, including radio. We run existing services like bbc.co.uk/programmes and iPlayer for Radio, and work to ship new product ideas. You can read more about what we do at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radiolabs/

Key Outputs

We need you to:

* work as part of a team to build, test and deploy public-facing and internal apps
* plan your work and track its progress alongside technical project managers
* collaborate with a wide range of people, from designers to radio production staff
* be aware of personal financial authority limits and to ensure that this authority is exercised in accordance with BBC financial arrangements
* work to the BBC’s policy on Health and Safety

Key Knowledge And Experience

We need you to be a passionate, innovative, self-starting software engineer who loves programming and deadlines.
We use:

* mod_perl, Rails
* SVN, git
* Mac OSX, Linux
* VMWare, xen
* TDD, CI
* Scrum

Competencies

Communication Skills
Able to get ones message understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information. Ability to work with producers and designers to translate user requirements into technical specifications. Ability to communicate at all levels and to translate technical jargon for non-technical staff.

Planning and Organising
Ability to meet challenging operational datelines and to communicate any difficulties as early as possible.
Ability to think ahead to establish an efficient and appropriate course of action for self and others. Prioritises and plans activities taking into account all the relevant issues such as deadlines, staffing and resource requirements.

Decision Making
Is ready and able to take the initiative, originate action and be responsible for the consequences of the decisions made.
Ability to identify objectives and take responsibility for making rational decisions, rendering judgements and taking action following a logical evaluation of the facts, to meet the end goals.

Analytical Thinking
Ability to apply analytical and structured thinking to resolve programming problems. Ability to simplify complex problems, processes or projects into their component parts. Can explore and evaluate them systematically, can identify causal relationships and construct frameworks for problem solving and/or development.
